Veneta: country living twenty minutes west

Veneta sits west of Eugene on Highway 126 toward the coast range, a small city that was platted in 1912 and incorporated in 1962 after a fight over drinking water. The founder gave away three lots to anyone who would start a business, which is how the town got going.

Living here

Sailing and birding at Fern Ridge, an easy drive to Eugene, and a straight shot to the coast when you want it. The Oregon Country Fair, running since 1969, takes place on grounds out toward Elmira every July.

Schools

Fern Ridge School District serves the area. Note that the high school, Elmira High, is physically in Elmira rather than in Veneta.

Local knowledge

Things you learn by living here.

  • On August 27, 1972 the Grateful Dead played the old Renaissance Faire grounds out here as a benefit for Springfield Creamery, the Kesey family's business. The recording came out decades later as Sunshine Daydream. It is the single most famous thing that ever happened in west Lane County.
  • Fern Ridge is a Corps of Engineers reservoir, so levels are managed seasonally and drop after September for flood storage. What the shoreline looks like depends entirely on when you are standing there.
  • Veneta grew about sixty-six percent between 2000 and 2010 and another fourteen percent by 2020, which is why the housing runs newer than most small towns out this direction.
